Dubai’s Islands

February 18, 2008

I don’t know if ya’ll have heard anything about Dubai’s Islands but here’s the skinny.  The country of Dubai used to be a major oil exporter but reports indicate that their oil will run out in 2016 so to combat that loss of income they have started a huge initiative to become a tourist attraction.  They have done this by building the world’s tallest hotel, they are in the process of building two skyscrapers that will be the world’s tallest buildings and they have built (and are in the process of building) islands.  Yes you heard (read) right, islands.  They have two completed in the shape of palm trees and are in the process of building an archipelago of islands in the shape of the world and another larger palm tree.

Anyway the reason behind this is to express wonder at the undertaking of such a venture.  They have already proved that they can build a hotel on sand and two islands from scratch.  But really what’s the point?  Sure they’re getting a lot of media attention and a lot of tourism but what is the point?

I mean sure they can do these wondrous things, like the pyramids, Stonehenge, the tower of babel, the world archipelago but the question shouldn’t be “what can we do?” but rather “what should we do?”

There’s feasibly a lot, perhaps an infinite number of things we can accomplish as humans but shouldn’t we be asking ourselves what these amazing things are doing to the world around us, shouldn’t we be asking ourselves what the actual point is – because I don’t know about you but I’d rather have future generations remember us for our thinking skills and not for our ability to boast about ourselves by building tall buildings – and shouldn’t we be asking ourselves if we should really undertake these ventures – is it worth it?

Oh my, that comment came out horribly formatted…silly tags. Sorry about that. This should do it, if you could delete the other one. Sorry once again for the hassle.

Dubai is also going to have the worlds largest and tallest bridge as well, in 2012. I’d love to see the United Arab Emirates do more to improve their crazy laws, instead of imprisoning foreign travelers for 4 years because they carry prescription drugs or have extremely minuscule amount of things that could be illegal drugs on the bottom of their shoes. I think it would be much more “worth it” if we as human beings were working to accomplish a goal to better the world, controlling global warming or trying to better the lives of those less fortunate, rather than trying to enlarge our ego’s with marvelous displays of engineering. Sure its nice and all, but I think the planet and our future might be a bit more important.

Another update, apparently Dubai recently finished an underwater hotel. That’s right, I said UNDERWATER…….sheesh.
And to Silence, it’s no problem and thank you for your wonderful comment(s)
