It’s always somebody

So I was sitting and watching an episode of CSI tonight and it was about this college girl that went missing. Anyway straight to the point they found her dead and upon further investigation found that it was an actual and complete accident. Let me explain - She had just dropped out of college, was leaving, had her room all packed up and had called a cab. Well just before she left she emptied her trash, turns out the trash chute was broken and snapped shut, taking her trashcan along with her trash…not a big deal but she wanted her entire deposit back so she went down to the dumpster to fish out her trashcan. About that time an expectant father, in an effort to get to his wife quickly cut down the alleyway, hitting said dumpster which college girl was climbing on - killing her. Total accident.
Anyway point being when they told the parents their immediate (and I do mean immediate) reaction was “it wasn’t an accident, someone killed her.” Now I know what you’re thinking “Chill Gothique, it’s just a show.” And that may be the case, but I can’t help but think that this is an accurate reflection of ‘popular’ thinking these days.
It’s always somebody’s fault. There are no accidents. Someone’s to blame. Always. There has to be a scapegoat.
Since when can their be no accidents. That’s life, it’s chaotic and unpredictable. And sure being more aware will likely cut down on the number of “accident’s” but I bet you it will also cut down on the number of lawsuits. I’m thinking in particular of the story I always hear about the woman who spilt coffee on herself and sued the restaurant because the coffee was hot………DUH!!! She ordered hot coffee, what did she expect. It’s always someone’s fault. And it’s always someone else.
“It’s their fault, they didn’t stop.” “It’s her fault, I warned her.” “They should have told me that it was hot/cold.” “That stop sign was hidden, the city needs to fix that.” “She should’ve been safe walking out into the street, he should’ve been paying more attention.” “It was an important phone call, maybe they shouldn’t have been (fill in blank).” “They were speeding more than me, the cops just have it in for me.” “Maybe if they had done their jobs better we wouldn’t be in this situation.” “Someone had to clean up after their mess.”
It’s always somebody else’s fault.
I bet that if you did the research you would find that the number of lawsuits has more than tripled in the last ten years. It’s the new American Dream. Find someone richer than you or bigger than you who has supposedly done something wrong to you personally and sue them. Get rich quick and your fifteen minutes of fame, all at the same time.
It’s always somebody else’s fault.
